The first iPhone Ultra will likely be Apple's most ambitious iPhone yet — and its biggest gamble. As the company's first foldable iPhone, it promises a completely new experience, but it also comes with first-generation risks. With an expected starting price of around $2,300, the real question isn't just whether Apple can build a great foldable — it's whether you should buy into the first generation or wait for the refinements that usually come with version two.
For early adopters, the iPhone Ultra could be one of the most exciting iPhone launches in years. But for anyone spending this much on a completely new form factor, the decision deserves more thought. Should you be among the first to enter Apple's foldable era, or let others test the waters before committing? Here's what to consider before deciding.
Recent reports suggest the launch may be more complicated than a typical iPhone release. The iPhone Ultra may be announced alongside the iPhone 18 lineup in September but arrive in stores closer to October, with early supply reportedly limited to around a million units. None of these details have been confirmed by Apple, but they add another layer of uncertainty to an already difficult choice.
Apple Has Run This Playbook Before
If the delay holds up, it wouldn't be the first time Apple has launched a category-defining device this way. The iPhone X, announced alongside the iPhone 8 in 2017, shipped roughly two months after the rest of that year's lineup — and spent months after launch being genuinely hard to find. Pre-order slots vanished within minutes, resellers marked up units well above retail, and "in stock" didn't become the norm for a while.
The iPhone Ultra fitting the same pattern isn't a coincidence so much as a recognizable move: when Apple enters a genuinely new category, it's willing to let demand outpace supply for a stretch rather than rush inventory before the hardware and the assembly line are both ready. For a foldable — a much more complex product than a flat-screen phone — that caution is arguably more justified than it was for the iPhone X.
What it means for you practically: if you want one at launch, the six-week gap between the September announcement and actual availability is time to get a preorder lined up early, not time to relax. And even after that, a million-unit first batch — if it holds — is a fraction of what a mainline iPhone typically ships in its opening weeks, so "available to order" and "easy to get" may not be the same thing for a while.
What $2,300 Actually Buys You
A starting price around $2,300 would put the iPhone Ultra above Apple's entire existing hardware lineup, except for the Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR. For context, that's more than the starting price of a MacBook Air. It's in the same range as a mid-tier MacBook Pro, or an 11-inch iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil added on top.
Apple has never tested this price point on an iPhone before. Even the highest-configured Pro Max models, fully specced with maximum storage, have historically landed well below this. That's a genuinely new data point for the company, and it's part of why the "worth it or wait" question carries more weight this generation than it usually does for an iPhone refresh — the downside of buying into a first generation is larger when the entry price itself is this high.
The Scarcity Paradox
Here's the tension worth sitting with: the higher the price, the harder it is to predict demand — fewer buyers can justify the cost, and Apple has no direct precedent for how a $2,300 iPhone would sell. But a first-of-its-kind device from Apple has a separate pull that a normal price-demand curve doesn't fully capture. Being first, being scarce, and being the only fold with iOS behind it are themselves reasons some buyers will pay whatever it costs.
That paradox is exactly why a limited first batch doesn't necessarily mean weak demand, and heavy demand doesn't necessarily validate the price. It just means the two ordinary signals — "is this popular" and "is this worth the money" — are harder to read apart from each other this time. If you're deciding whether to chase a first-batch unit, it's worth being honest about which of those two things is actually driving your decision.
Waiting Has Layers Now
With a firm delay and a constrained supply both in the picture, "wait" isn't one option anymore — it's a few, with different costs attached:
● Wait six weeks (September announcement to October availability): Low cost. This is mostly a patience question, not a risk question.
● Wait for supply to loosen (likely sometime after the initial batch clears): Medium cost. You skip the worst of the launch scramble and resale markups, but you're still buying the same first-generation hardware, unknowns included.
● Wait for generation two: Highest cost in time, lowest cost in risk. You get a device Apple has had a full cycle to refine — assuming Apple treats this the way it's treated other first-gen categories, where the second version tends to fix the rough edges of the first.
If reports about Apple reworking other parts of the lineup around the same time generation two would arrive turn out to be accurate, that's one more reason the long wait might pay off — a second-generation fold landing alongside a broader refresh is more likely to be a real step forward than a minor spec bump. Again: none of this is confirmed, and it's a factor to weigh, not a reason to make the decision for you.

If You're Coming From a Samsung Fold — What Actually Changes
If you're a Galaxy Fold owner considering the jump, the hardware comparison isn't really what should worry you. It's the switch itself.
Years of Android habits don't transfer cleanly. Your app layouts, your widget setup, whatever workaround you've built for split-screen multitasking — none of that carries over. iOS handles a large folding screen differently from One UI, and Apple's approach to third-party app support for a new form factor has historically been more conservative than Samsung's, at least in the first year or two. That's a real cost, separate from any discussion of display quality, hinge durability, or the pricing questions above.
The ecosystem question matters more if you're already deep into Apple elsewhere — Mac, AirPods, and an Apple Watch you're not about to replace. For those users, the friction of switching phone platforms is lower because everything else already talks to each other. For Android loyalists with no other Apple hardware in the house, that friction is the whole ballgame, and no amount of hinge engineering — or launch-day scarcity — changes that math.
For the full side-by-side on specs, design, and how the two devices actually compare on paper, we went through it in Samsung Creaseless Fold vs iPhone Fold: Design, Ecosystem, Users.
Should You Buy a Case or Screen Protector Before It Launches?
From a pure protection standpoint, yes — getting a case and screen protector lined up as close to day one as possible is the right instinct. A device expected to start around $2,300, with a flexible inner display that's inherently more fragile than standard glass, is not the kind of phone you want to carry unprotected even for a day, and that's arguably more true now that a rough launch window and limited stock mean a damaged unit is harder to quickly replace.
The timing is the complication, not the idea. The iPhone Ultra is still a few months out from actually reaching stores, and most accessory makers — case brands included — can't finalize tooling for a device whose exact hinge mechanism and fold dimensions haven't been locked down yet. That's true industry-wide right now, not specific to any one brand.
Right now, the foldable accessory market is still built almost entirely around Samsung. Spigen and Samsung's own official case line are the two names most Galaxy Fold owners already know, and both have spent years working through the same core problems: protecting the hinge without stiffening it enough to affect how the phone opens, covering an inner screen that scratches far more easily than standard glass, and doing all of that without adding so much bulk that the phone stops folding flat. Neither has fully solved all three at once — that's still an open problem across the whole category, not just for Apple's version.
We're not sitting this one out. As an iPhone accessory maker, we've watched the same pain points play out across the foldable category that Galaxy Fold owners have dealt with for years, and we're already working on how to address them differently once there's a real iPhone Ultra/Fold to design around. We're not ready to share specifics yet, but if you've been frustrated by bulky foldable cases or screen protectors that don't hold up at the crease, keep an eye on this space — we think we can do better, and we're looking forward to showing you.
FAQ
Is the iPhone Ultra really launching in October instead of September?
Recent reports suggest Apple will announce the iPhone Ultra alongside the rest of the iPhone 18 lineup in September, but delay its actual on-sale date by roughly six weeks, pushing availability into October. This hasn't been confirmed by Apple. If it holds, it would echo how Apple handled the iPhone X launch in 2017, which also arrived later than the rest of that year's lineup and stayed hard to find for months afterward.
How limited is the first-batch supply expected to be?
Some reports point to an initial production run of around a million units — small relative to a typical mainline iPhone launch. If accurate, that suggests early demand could outstrip supply for a while after release, similar to what happened with the iPhone X. Treat this as an early estimate rather than a confirmed number.
Is a $2,300 starting price for the iPhone Ultra worth it?
That price would put it above Apple's other iPhones and even above the entry-level MacBook Air — a price point Apple has never used for an iPhone before. Whether it's worth it depends less on the number itself and more on how much you value being an early adopter of Apple's first foldable versus waiting for a more refined, likely cheaper-to-justify second generation.
Should I wait for the second-generation iPhone Ultra?
If you prefer to avoid early-generation trade-offs, history suggests waiting can be a safer choice — both Apple and Samsung improved significantly between the first and second generations of their foldable devices. That said, if you want to experience the category from the beginning and are comfortable with launch-window scarcity and a high price, the first generation can still be a valid choice. It comes down to how much risk and how much waiting you're willing to accept.
Will the iPhone Ultra be worth switching from a Galaxy Fold?
The decision depends less on the hardware itself and more on your current ecosystem. If you're already using Apple devices such as a Mac, AirPods, or Apple Watch, the transition will likely feel seamless. If you're coming from a fully Android-based setup like the Galaxy Fold, the switch involves more adjustment beyond just the device itself — and that adjustment cost doesn't change whether you get the phone in the first batch or after supply catches up.
Should I buy an iPhone 17 Pro now instead of waiting for the iPhone Ultra?
This mainly depends on timing and pricing considerations. If you need a device now or prefer a more established product line, the iPhone 17 Pro remains a solid option. If you're specifically interested in the fold category, it may be worth waiting to see how the product — and its price and availability — actually shake out once it ships.
When will accessories for the iPhone Ultra be available?
Accessories are typically not available before launch, and usually not immediately after either. Manufacturers need finalized hardware specifications before designing compatible products, and a hinge mechanism that isn't locked down yet makes that harder across the whole industry right now. Once the device is officially released, accessory availability generally follows shortly after.
Will Apple's first foldable be called iPhone Ultra or iPhone Duo?
Apple hasn't confirmed the name yet. iPhone Ultra has been one of the most consistently reported names, while iPhone Duo has also gained attention as a possible alternative. iPhone Fold is another commonly used placeholder. Until Apple announces the device, all three should be treated as unofficial names for the same first-generation foldable iPhone.
